DID YOU MISS QUILT BC IN PENTICTON LAST MONTH???

Hopefully you did not miss it?? But if you did, here is a report back. I was there and it was good!!

I set off bright & early as we had to set up 2 classrooms with our JANOME MC8900 as well as our booth in the Merchant Mall. It was a busy day but we were all set up & ready to go with classes etc for Thursday morning 16th May.  Anna Hergert and Judy Farrow graciously stepped into the empty space left by Libby Lehman’s sudden illness and by all accounts, those attending Anna’s & Judy’s classes were very pleased and learnt a great deal.  Elizabeth Spannring  who was the teacher in the other classroom with our JANOME MC8900’S, offered 3 separate one day classes on Free motion quilting. Those were fully booked and – once again – the reports from folk taking the classes was all good.  The class participants were sure able to put our deluxe Convertible Free motion foot through it’s paces: no clunky hopping foot: this one is spring loaded and fully adjustable for quilt sandwich height as well as offering 3 different feet: closed toe, open toe & clear view.

Putting the finishing touches to our JANOME booth in the Merchant Mall

Scott is checking up that we have put all the finishing touches to our JANOME booth in the Merchant Mall

"Cedar" by Rita Macdonnell of Peachland, BC

“Cedar” by Rita Macdonnell of Peachland, BC

This incredible quilt was hanging in the Invitational Show which was separate from the NATIONAL JURIED SHOW. We were able to take photo’s in this show hence these being the ones I am showing. We are not allowed to take photo’s in the National Juried Show so I will need to approach some of the winners directly to ask permission + to ask them to share a pic or 2 with us.  I will tell you that I thought many of the entries in this year’s NJS were really outstanding so watch this blog on 5th June for pics I am busy requesting from winners.

OK – so more about this “Cedar” quilt above: I was amazed at how realistic the cedar tree was. I had to peer real close (of course not daring to touch!!) to actually see if the greenery was real or not. One lady told me she tried to smell as she was sure it was real. No, it was not: Rita had obviously spent simply ages doing thread work on tulle or something similar to re-create 3 dimensional greenery which she used on her quilt.

Here is what I gathered from the write-up next to the quilt. It is Rita’s original design and she has been quilting since 2006 – folks that is a mere 7 years!! WOW. Rita has tried many different techniques but does get the most satisfaction from creating quilts of her own design. She enjoys trying to reproduce the shapes, textures & colours found in nature whch is her main source of inspiration. NO KIDDING….those tree branches were so realistic I thought she might have attached the real cedar onto her quilt!  Here is a close up pic……..can you tell that this quilt made quite an impression on me?!!

Don't laugh! This is a pic of the carpet in the Penticton Trade & Convention center......there I am standing entranced looking at quilts & suddenly it dawned on me that I was STANDING on a pretty cool piece of inspiration for a quilt!!

This quilt was made by Terry Aske. I have featured her before on this blog....she lives in Vancouver and this quilt is called Rainy Day People. Just love the bright coloured umbrella's to cheer up a grey Vancouver day!!

Just love the bright coloured umbrella’s to cheer up a grey Vancouver day!! Scott, our Janome Sales Manager,  was really impressed with this quilt.

Thank you to all those folk who took the time to come and thank us for our sponsorship of the classroom machines (JANOME MC8900) and various other aspects : JANOME also sponsored the NJS Pictorial booklet and  NJS CD as well as several awards given out to winning quilters (we sponsored the 3 judges awards as well as 2nd place in the Original Design Nonrepresentational Wall quilt).

Our dealer, Linda’s Quilt Shoppe with stores in Kelowna, BC and the Westside of Kelowna also sponsored a prize of  JANOME 2030QDC  which was randomly drawn from attendees at the Friday night lecture by Anna Hergert. I was at the booth when the winner of this machine came by to collect it – needless to say she was very excited and pleased to have won a JANOME sewing machine.

I was really thrilled that Cathy Martino who works at our Nanaimo dealer: Snip & Stitch won 1st place in the Wearable Art category for a rather lovely silver/grey jacket – Kwiksilver jacket. I hope to share more about this with you when I have some pics. from Cathy. Check out the blog post coming this week on Wed 5th June for pics of award winning entries in  the NJS 2013.

Joan Bielun of Penticton, BC sews on the JANOME 7700 and she won an award for her entry: Elements of Change. You simply have to see her quilts to believe what you are seeing. I will post pics of this quilt on Wed 5th June so be sure to check back. I have featured another of her winning quilts before – when she won an awards at THE GRAND NATIONAL  in Ontario – try searching the archives for that post about Joan’s quilt that she made using a photo she took of a Galapagos tortoise. It was also sensational.

NEXT YEAR QUILT CANADA  will be held in the NIAGARA region at Brock University, St Catherine’s, Ontario from 11-14th June. You might want to mark your calendars now to join us there – No sense in missing it 2 years in a row – not when there is so much fun to be had and so much incredible quilting talent to see & learn about!

      Hi Judy,
Yes, I will see you all next week. Bring your Mc12000 questions as well as anything you have sewed that you would like to share with us all.
Yes, I will bring the Circular attachment + samples of what we can do with it. I will demo it too if we have time – seems like we are going to have TONS to talk about!
Yes, there is a new Free Motion Couching foot for Janome owners which I will definitely have with me to demo. You can couch yarns etc with this. Please bring the pattern you refer to so that I can see what you mean.
