Continuing with our JANOME OPTIONAL ACCESSORY series:
THE “RULER” FOOT.

FREE MOTION FRAME QUILTING FEET SET – I am talking about the foot on the LEFT. The one on the right is the open toe foot for Janome 1600P
Now I must tell you a little bit of a story about this foot: We have had it for a long time….I’m thinking several years. It’s official name is the JANOME FREE MOTION FRAME QUILTING FOOT SET PART #767434005. As with all the new feet, it landed on my desk, I looked at it and saw the information on the box indicated it was for use with the JANOME 1600P. This is a straight stitch machine and so you would select these feet if you plan on using our JANOME 1600P on a FRAME. These feet do need to be attached to a CONVERTIBLE free motion foot for the Janome 1600P which is a separate part # 767433004. Please note that the Janome 1600P has a different configuration and side loading which our other machines do not have. Hence the Convertible foot holder set for the 1600P is not interchangeable with other Janome models (see below). In other words, these feet were designed to be used on the 1600P when it is not on a table but mounted onto a quilting frame where you move the machine and the quilt stays stationary on the frame & rollers made for this purpose. Now, I do not have a JANOME 1600P open in the classroom, nor do I have a frame, so I pretty much put this foot set out of sight & out of mind…………..well I am sorry!! I should not have done this….oops.

CONVERTIBLE FREE MOTION FOOT HOLDER WITH “RULER” FOOT TOE ATTACHED. NOTICE HOW IT HAS A THICK “LIP” AND RIDES NICELY AGAINST THE RULER
Turns out, this foot set can be used when you do not have the JANOME 1600P OR a quilting frame………..Yes, you can use it on other JANOME machine models (more below) when they are standing firmly table top/not on a frame! I was approached by one of my BC dealers; Langley Vacuum & Sewing recently with a question about a “RULER” foot to use on our machines when we quilt. I was told it was a JANOME FOOT???? ……..Needless to say, I was coming up blank as I had not heard anything about a RULER foot. My dealer insisted and then sent me a link to a blogpost where……….YES…….a JANOME customer had experimented with this foot set on her JANOME MC6600P. Please feel free to check out this link: my acknowledgments go to Amy’s Free Motion Quilting Adventures. Amy has a JANOME MC 6600P which she does not use on a frame. This link tells you her whole story. Amy calls our JANOME FREE MOTION FRAME QUILTING FEET SET a “ruler” foot – Sure is less of a “mouthful”! The closed toe foot in this set has a thick “lip” which is very useful for doing free motion quilting when you wish to follow a line or curve using a ruler as your guide. Some folk like to mark their lines onto their quilt tops with chalk (or other means) and then free motion as close to their markings as possible. Some just “wing” it entirely. But if you want to ensure that your lines or curves are pretty smooth and even, a little help may be a good thing! Here is where the RULERS come in. Remember to allow 1/4 inch between the desired placing of the stitching & ruler edge as the distance between the edge of the foot which will ride along the ruler edge and the needle is 1/4 inch.

ON RIGHT: CONVERTIBLE FREE MOTION FOOT HOLDER WITH “RULER” FOOT ATTACHED.
ON LEFT: CLOSED TOE; CLEAR VIEW FOOT & OPEN TOE ATTACHMENTS WHICH COME WITH THE CONVERTIBLE FREE MOTION FOOT SET
Janome Canada does not sell these rulers. Mine shows in the pic as lime green…..which it is. The brand name on mine is The Gadget Girls & has scallops on one side & a double curve on the other. No clue where I acquired it (many years ago) but it has been quite useful on a number of occasions. I cannot speak for other countries who may have these rulers available for their Janome dealers to sell. Please make applicable enquiries in your country. Some of our Janome dealers may very well have these rulers – I know of several in Western Canada who DO (for example: SNIP AND STITCH in Nanaimo, BC). Most quilt stores carry one or another of these brands of rulers OR can certainly order for you if you ask. Google is also a wonderful thing! Do your research on which brands and styles might be useful for your purposes and then ask your dealer to order this for you. Just in case you might be getting confused: These rulers are not for rotary cutting! It is a special straight or curved ruler which is a bit thicker than a regular rotary cutting ruler. This is because you do NOT want the ruler to slip under the foot as you free motion quilt as you will then have one broken needle lickety-split fast……and a dinged ruler too! So the rulers are designed thicker to prevent them slipping under the foot. And if you look at the pic at the top of this post, you will see that the foot on the left is quite thick as well so that it will ride up against the ruler and all will be well. If you have a LOW shank JANOME machine (ask your local JANOME DEALER if you are unsure) then you would need the following Janome parts: Convertible Free Motion foot set for low shank models Part # 202002004 PLUS the part # listed above which contains the 2 extra parts – one of which is the “ruler” foot. It is compatible with this Convertible set.
If you have a HIGH shank JANOME machine that has a 7mm opening in the needle plate, then you need: Convertible Free Motion foot for High shank 7mm Part # 202001003 PLUS the frame set above for the “ruler” foot.
If you have a HIGH shank JANOME machine that has a 9mm opening in the needleplate, then you need: Convertible Free Motion Foot set for 9mm Part # 202146001 PLUS the frame set for the “ruler” foot You may already have the Convertible Free Motion foot set as this does come as a standard accessory with some of our JANOME machine models. If you are unsure, check the Instruction manual for your machine model: it does list all the feet which would have been included with your machine. If it is listed and you don’t have it….well then my advice would be to start tidying up your sewing room and searching in all those drawers & boxes as you may have mislaid a very useful set of feet for your machine!! The link above has a video and other information relevant to the functioning of these CONVERTIBLE FREE MOTION FEET SETS. Check these out as it will help you immeasurably to get the most from your sewing machine feet & accessories.
Please note that Janome is not recommending the use of this Convertible Free motion foot and “ruler foot” attachment for machine models which have automatic presser foot lift as there is a chance that the foot could go up too high in the auto presser foot lift function and cause damage. Warranty will not cover damage caused by using these feet on models with Auto presser foot lift: Janome Mc12000, Mc15000 and Skyline S7.
Do also check out Amy’s blog as she has advice & video’s there too. So, what will you be free motioning today????
Greetings!
New Horizon MC8000 is my machine….which is a high shank Janome, I believe. What do I need to purchase in order to be able to do RULING QUILTING? I’m so hopeful of trying this FMQ method.
THANKS!

Hi Aaynne,
Yes, I think your model is a high shank so you would need the Convertible Free motion foot set for High shank models + the part # 767434005 – as listed in these blog posts about “ruler” feet. You would also need ruler(s) as discussed on these posts + on links referred to in the posts.
Please check with your local Janome dealer about whether the MC8000 is a high shank or low shank. It is a long while since I saw one so I am not 100% sure. If low shank, then you need the Convertible free motion foot set for low shank instead.

I have a janome 8909SE and wonder if this foot would work on my machine. I’m just learning about this today (I’ve spoken with Liz on the phone once for some guidance so hoping for some more help.). If it can be used on my machine, where would I get it? Can I order it online? No janome dealers in my area. Thanks.

Hi Lana,
Was that a typo? Do you mean MC8900SE – I am assuming so. Yes, you can use this foot on your machine. Please follow the instructions in the blog post for which part# is needed to add to your Convertible Free Motion foot set which comes standard with your machine. You need to order from a local Janome dealer so I would suggest you go online and find a dealer closest to you (www.janome.ca > Dealer locator) and contact them about shipping the part to you. Many of our dealers are happy to do this.

Hi Debbie,
I have done a number of posts about this foot. The latest was on 11th Sept – last month – where I give details about the various part #’s which are required to use this foot. I’m almost sure your Janome 4000 is a low shank machine so you would need the low shank Convertible foot set. But please confirm this with your local Janome dealer.

Hi Irene,
I have done quite a few posts on this “ruler” foot. If you put ruler foot into the search box on janomelife blog, you will find all the info you need.
For the Mc12000 you need (1) the Convertible Free Motion foot set for 9mm wide high shank models Part#202146001 and (2) you need the actual “ruler” foot Part # 767434005
I am getting so many queries about this incredibly “HOT” new technique with using a ruler for free motion work that I will do another blog post soon on this topic. So please keep watching the blog.

Hi Amy,
Lovely to “chat” at long last. I did also look for you in San Antonio but was super busy in classes everyday so I missed you. I have actually done another post on ruler work and the Janome feet needed. I think it is scheduled for tomorrow.
Congrats on your Craftsy class. I enjoyed watching it. And gave it a quick mention on this upcoming post.
I wil actually be doing a lot of promo’s across Canada this Fall on using rulers with our Janome machines as well as our wonderful Artistic SD18 sit down quilter – together with much else on the topic of JANOME WHAT’s NEXT.
Thanks for making contact. And no, I have no wish to “smack” you. I follow your blog and am thoroughly enjoying ruler work. Have done quite a bit on the SD18 ; MC 8900 & MC8200 as well as on our Skyline series. Of course, we can do it on most of our other Janome & Elna machines too. I showed ruler work to the International Educators and our Janome Tokyo team in June this year when I was in Japan for our International Educators Meeting. It sure has become a very hot trend in the quilting world.

Yes, Barb, you can. I did another post on 11th Sept 2015 showing exactly what is needed and what the part numbers are. Please refer to this. Your 3160 QDC is a low shank machine so look for that low shank foot. All details in the blog post.

Hi Anne,
Lucky you! I LOVE that machine. Stay in touch with your local Janome dealer and/or watch this blog as I will post when any optional feet become available for the SD18.
You CAN use longarm rulers with the current foot that comes with the SD18. I have done it quite a lot and successfully. I would prefer a closed toe & something with a slightly thicker “lip” but it does work as is.

Hey Liz and Anne Marie,
Since I’m such a fan of ruler work and we’ve got an Artistic SD18 in the shop where I teach, we bought the ruler foot for the regular Artistic machines so I can use it in demos on the sit down machine. It fits and works. There’s a cut out in the foot for visibility but it’s oriented to the user sitting at the head of the machine instead of the side.

I ran across Amy’s blog two and a half years ago and immediately got the ruler foot for my 7700 Horizon and ordered a couple of Fine Line rulers. I showed them to my LQS, Taylors Sewing Center, in Brockville ON and they ordered more of the rulers. I have gotten others from different places as well. Once you start using them you’ll want to use them more….really is addictive. I can do a piano key border very quickly and accurately, with no marking. Curves and circles…no problem.

Hi I have been told (uk) that the ruler foot will not fit the convertible free motion quilting foot set for the mc9900 this is a 9mm and high shank model set do you think it would please
LikeLike
Hi Margaret,
That is not my understanding. The ruler foot Part #767434005 fits ONTO the bottom of the Convertible Free Motion foot set – whether it is high or low shank, 7mm or 9mm model machine. Yes, you obviously cannot use a 9mm wide zig-zag stitch with this foot but then you cannot do that with the closed toe or little open toe attachment either. Common sense it will break the needle if you do.
And yes, I KNOW it fits…have used it myself many times. But just for straight stitch free motion and specifically for working with the 1/4 inch thick longarm rulers. Works a treat!

Hi Margaret,
Must be the proper 1/4 inch thick longarm rulers. A rotary cutting type ruler is too thin & the ruler foot will ride up 7 over the edge. you need the 1/4 inch thickness and the “lip” on the “ruler” foot to butt up against the ruler to work properly. Shop around and see what rulers are available in your area. I bought a 10 inch straight ruler and a right angle ruler. The latter is very helpful for multiple rows of straight lines. I also bought 2 rulers with curves & scallops/half circles so making scallops, rows of clam shell shapes & full circles is a breeze.
Experiment and see what works for you. Have fun!

I believe so. I think – but check with your local Elna dealer – that your model is a low shank so you would need the Convertible Free motion foot set for LOW shank and then add the “ruler foot” package to this – so 2 different part numbers – all indicated on this blog.

I have the Janome 8900 QCP and can confirm that this foot works WONDERFULLY, even though my dealer said it would not because the 1600P is a 7mm machine and my 8900 is a 9mm machine. Hello? I am not going sideways when I am FMQing, just up and down. Works like a charm. However, your links to Janome do not show this foot at all. The part # on the back says 767-434-005 which is different from your post.

Hi Constance,
Yes, you are correct. Those links don’t seem to be working. I think it is because they pre-date the new http://www.janome.com website and things changed with the intro of the new website. Thank you for pointing it out as I have removed the links that were not working. The pics in the post tell the story anyway.
And, yes, we are correct….the foot will work! Enjoy.

I think your best bet is to consult a Janome dealer who also sells Pfaff. They should be able to advise you if the Grand Quilter is similar to our 1600P and whether this foot would fit or not.

Hi Glenys,
Thank you for your query all the way from Australia to Canada! You will need to check with your local Australian dealer about this foot. It IS available globally but your local dealer may be unaware of it and Janome Australia may or may not have it in stock. You would need to ask. I think I posted the part #’s on this particular blog post so your dealer could contact Janome Australia to make inquiries for you.
Your Janome Horizon 7700 is a HIGH SHANK machine and does 7mm wide stitching.

This is wonderful, I have the Horizon 15K but have these attachments for the 11K. I have tried them and they seem to fit and worked OK in my testing. My question is, having the 1003 for 7mm do I really need to purchase 1001 for 9mm? The opening in the stitch plate is OK. Both are High Shank machines, correct?
LikeLike
Hi Claire,
I’m a bit confused as to which foot you want to use on which machine: do you mean 202146001 Convertible FM foot for 9mm machines? I don’t see a 1001 anywhere in my post.
But, yes, both 11000 and 15000 are high shank. The ankles are different and clip-on feet are NOT interchangeable. The Convertible free motion foot set that comes with the Mc15000 is entirely different to the one you would use with the Mc11000. On the Mc15000 you do not use a spring loaded FM foot – you use the regular ankle. I have not tested the Mc15K ankle on the Mc11000. I highly doubt it would work as the machines are configured differently + one is 7mm & the other is 9mm. About the only similarity is the high shank part. We would not recommend using Mc15000 parts on a Mc11000 & vice versa.
This foot – the ruler foot I wrote the post about – is actually for the Mc16000P which is another machine entirely: it has a side configuration & is straight stitch. However, we discovered it also worked with our FM Convertible feet for some other machines. I have not tested it on every model – especially ones which are not designed the same way.
But if you attach the “ruler” foot to your Convertible Free motion foot set for High shank it should work so long as you do NOT expect it to do a 9mm wide dec stitch.
