Well, it is quite staggering how incredibly “HOT” this technique has become in the last while. Everyone is talking about using rulers for free motion work on regular stationary sewing machines.  Using rulers with long arm quilting machines on a frame has been done for a long time. But what is really “hot” right now is using the same sort of rulers long-armers use to free motion straight lines, circles, scallops and all sorts of shapes…..but this is done on any stationary sewing machine where you move the fabric & ruler instead of the machine across the frame.

I am getting SO many phone call; emails and blog queries that I thought I should do another blog post on this topic.

Just so you are aware: I have done many posts over the last 12-18 months on this same topic so you may search for ruler foot in the search box on janomelife. This will show you all the posts on this topic.  However, I will repeat a good deal of the information here as most people don’t seem to know it is possible to go back in the archives of our janomelife blog to access all past posts.

Also: you might be aware of the website http://www.craftsy.com. Just a week or so ago, Amy Johnson’s class on Ruler work became available for purchase. I bought it and found it pretty good. Amy has been doing ruler work for a couple of years and she is a Janome fan – she actually uses the Janome MC8200 in her online class and shows the “ruler” foot I will feature today. You might like to investigate this online course.

THIS is the foot that everyone is calling the “ruler” foot. It was actually made for the Janome 1600P straight stitch machine. However, we have found that it works wonderfully well when attached to the bottom of the CONVERTIBLE FREE MOTION FOOT SET.  So you have to start there. Some of our machines come standard with this Convertible Free motion foot set. Some don’t & you will need to purchase it from your local Janome dealer. Please be sure to buy the correct one for your machine model as follows:

  1. LOW shank machines with 7mm wide stitching  Convertible Free Motion foot set Part # 202002004
  2. HIGH shank machines 7mm wide stitching Convertible Free motion foot set Part# 202001003
  3. HIGH shank machines 9mm wide stitching Convertible Free Motion foot set Part# 202146001
  4. Please note that Janome is not recommending the use of this Convertible Free motion foot and “ruler foot” attachment for machine models which have automatic presser foot lift as there is a chance that the foot could go up too high in the auto presser foot lift function and cause damage. Warranty will not cover damage caused by using these feet on models with Auto presser foot lift: Janome Mc12000, Mc15000 and Skyline S7.

THEN add the ruler foot set Part # 767434005 – same part number for any of the #1-#3 feet listed above.

Hi Liz, I have just purchased a second hand Janome MC12000 and was wondering what ruler foot can be used safely for the MC12000? I do already have the high shank Westalee foot.

    Hi Liz
what size rulers do you recommend? I have the skyline 5

    Like

    • lizafrica says:

      Hi Michele,

The Skyline 5 is a high shank machine so you have a little more room under the needle bar so you can use the slightly thicker rulers – approx 1/4 inch thick. If you are new to ruler quilting, I would suggest starting with a small 6 inch straight ruler and one curved ruler. You can do quite a lot with these and then you can branch out and buy more rulers when you know what type of shapes and quilting you wish to do.

      Hi,
It is high shank. And due to the auto presser foot lift on this model, it is not warranteed for use with the Convertible Free motion foot set and ruler foot.

      Hi Marjorie,

The Janome Horizon 7700 is a HIGH shank 7mm model. In this blog post that you attached your comment to, your machine is therefore #2 so please follows those specifications + further down in the post it mentions you also need: Part # 767434005 – so typically a high shank/7mm machines needs 2 parts. HOWEVER the first one listed under #2 is already supplied as a standard accessory with the 7700 so you only need to buy ONE part: 767434005.

    • lizafrica says:

Yes, Linda. I do believe you need a low shank set for the MC4900 but please check with your dealer. And you would need the slightly thinner rulers for a low shank machine.

I purchased the CRAFTSY class and ONLY after reading this blog by chance (I am in the UK) did I find that ruler foot is NOT recommended for MC15000 which I own and am reluctant to using anything else now. It saddens me that I cannot practice this technique on a machine which can do, well….anything. Any suggestions?
BTW, the accessory book 2015 given out by Janome here and all the sewing machine stockists, states that this part is available for 9mm machines……it does not publish the disclaimer regarding the automatic presser lift.

      Hi Fiona,

We are based at Janome Canada and we cannot comment on what is or is not in the Accessory book published in the UK. Sorry. I am merely reporting what Janome Head Office in Japan advised. Due to the auto presser foot lift, using the Convertible free motion foot on the Janome Mc15000 is not recommended. Do I use it? Well I do try to do my ruler quilting on my big Artistic SD18 sit down quilter which is where I would be doing my free motion quilting for the most part. However, I have used the Convertible Free motion foot on the Janome Mc15000 BUT was super careful that I switched off the auto presser foot lift/pivot function. This is ESSENTIAL. And I am aware that if I forget to do this and possibly accidentally damage my machine, that this damage will not be covered under the warranty.
I still would NOT wish to give up my Janome MC15000 and its auto presser foot lift/pivot function – it is wonderful!

I agree with you there Liz. And it is all too easy that ‘we know it all” and yet still accidentally forget to turn off that Auto Presser Foot. I have still got a Janome MC9000 and wonder if that would work. I didn’t expect to make many quilts, but purchased the Accuquilt Die Cutter and have made 3, very accurate, very different and in a few days. The quilting part is daunting and I thought this class really made it all sound so exciting as I break myself in gently to the world for Free-Motion Quilting.

Thank you so much for this advice. Loving your blogs.

I have the 12000 MC Horizon machine and really want to have a go at using rulers to quilt with but if as you say, you can’t use them with my machine, can you recommend something I can use? Or is it a strictly no chance in hell unless I want to risk damaging my machine?

    • lizafrica says:

      Hi Jo

The official recommendation from Janome Head office is not to use the Convertible Free motion foot on any of our machine models which have automatic presser foot lift/pivot function (which the Janome MC12000 does have). I have explained this on some of the blog posts about ruler quilting. At very least, you should switch OFF the auto presser foot lift function and even then, if you damage your machine, the warranty would not cover the damage.

Would I want to give up auto presser foot lift? NOT a chance! Do I do ruler quilting with the Convertible free motion foot? Yes, I do but I do try to do it on a different model or I make 100% sure I switch off auto presser foot lift/pivot function. And I know that if I forget, it is on me!

      Hi Stephanie,
You can use the current foot on the SD18 for ruler work. I have done this quite successfully. I know they are working on some optional accessories for the SD 18 but I have been given no indication of ETA. I will post information when see become available.
