Our Artistic Edge 15 Digital cutter

So what exactly does this cutter do?

Celine from Montreal cut these snowflakes on the Artistic Edge Digital cutter. The cutting mats are 15 inch square so we can cut lovely BIG shapes.....this snowflake is made up of 2 separate cuts: one blue and 1 white which were then glued together for a very pleasing two tone look.

Celine from Montreal cut these big cardstock snowflakes on the Artistic Edge Digital cutter which we used for decorating our booth at the Creativ Festival in Toronto recently. The cutting mats are 15 inch square so we can cut lovely BIG shapes…..this snowflake is made up of 2 separate cuts: one blue and 1 white which were then glued together for a very pleasing two tone look.

The Simple Cut software which is included with the cutter takes all the hassle out of cutting a wide array of different materials: No more AccuCutters with a separate die for every different shape & size…… No more light boxes or taping things to windows (?) to trace intricate applique shapes……. No more fiddling around with X-acto knives and scissors………YES, we have entered the digital age where our SIMPLE Cut software and Digital cutter does it all for us:

  • Cut simple or very intricate applique shapes for any & all forms of applique on quilts, home decor projects, garments and more.
Just one of the many dozens of applique stitches which can be used for applique-in-the-hoop with Simple Cut software. I really like this one...looks a bit like lace.

Just one of the many 100’s of applique stitches which can be used for applique-in-the-hoop with Simple Cut software. I really like this one…looks a bit like lace. The Artistic Edge Digital cut my white star AND digitized the lovely lace applique stitch exactly the size I needed to stitch down the star in the hoop of my Janome embroidery machine.

  • Not only does it cut our applique fabric but it also digitizes the applique stitch to stitch down that cut applique in the hoop of your home embroidery machine. No more holding your tongue in the right spot in your cheek as you try to sew an applique stitch exactly on the edge of the fabric! No, it is 100% perfect when done as applique-in-the-hoop. And there are literally HUNDREDS of different applique stitches to choose from (see pic above for just ONE of them). NO more cutting of intricate applique shapes with trim-in-place applique.  Yes….applique bliss has certainly arrived!
  • You need never buy another quilt or other type of stencil ever again……cut stencils from card stock, stencil plastic and more using Simple Cut’s clever stencil bridge function. Absolutely no need for X-acto knives and labour intensive fuss. Then use your stencil for whatever you have in mind: marking quilting designs onto your quilt? painting words and/or shapes onto a banner or poster?
  • Similarly, you too can now make your own silk screen templates very easily. No fancy equipment needed: just use self adhesive vinyl and drapery sheers to create a myriad of patterns for silk screen printing;  fabric painting and inking.
  • Ever bought stamps for scrapbooking, card making and/or fabric embellishment? Did you nearly choke when you saw the price of these little things which you might only use a few times? Mmmmm……yes, well, now make your own from any shape & size you so desire. Cut craft foam with the Artistic Edge digital cutter, mount onto a base such a thick cardstock or a little (wood or plastic) block….Voila! you have a stamp ready to ink and go.
  • Cut all your paper and cardstock designs for Scrapbooking and card making
  • Cut decals, motifs and more for your home décor and seasonal projects – use paper, card stock or vinyl – whatever material you desire.IMG_4528
  • Cut fabric, paper or card stock for little people parties as well as for big people: 2nd birthday party? 30th? 50th? engagement party? baby showers? bridal showers? and more. Decorating for every occasion becomes not only fun but quick & easy.
  • Cut Heat Transfer vinyl for applying onto T-shirts, onesies; pillows, bags and more
  • Cut self-adhesive vinyl for window decals, decorations, boxes, tins, shoes, bags, etc.
  •  I used the negative space from self adhesive vinyl cut-outs to stick onto wine glasses and toothbrush jars, etc and then applied etching paste to the glass showing through the cut out. Wash off the paste & voila! you have a permanently etched wine glass……think wedding, Christmas, birthday parties and more.
  • Do BLING the super easy way…….gone, gone , gone is the tedious hot fix crystal wand with each crystal applied one at a time. Nooooooo…….our Simple cut software lets you create intricate crystal and rhinestone layouts for application  – attach ALL the crystals at the same time!

  • Cut wood (like balsa wood) – simply stick it to the cutting mat, insert the correct of the 3 cutting blades & CUT. Use for decorations, models, card making and more
  • Cut metal to make jewellery, key rings, decals etc. Use thin sheets of silver, copper, brass , emboss or etch with our accessory tools & cut with the metal cutting blade on the cutter.

      Hi Susan

I’m sorry, but this post was published quite some time back and I don’t remember the exact site we used fir this cutting file. Best I can suggest is you do a google search for Christmas Nativity cutting files.

I was wondering what thickness of plastic the edge can cut

    • lizafrica says:

Using the correct blade and number of passes + blade depth & pressure settings are important. But the plastic must be bale to freely fit under the rollers.

    • lizafrica says:

      Hi Mary,
No, the Simple Cut software which comes included with this cutter is Windows based but, as with all our Windows based software, it is possible to operate it on a mac if you have software which partitions the hard drive. You then install the software on that part of the notebook.

      Hi Adrienne,

Yes, it sure does. The pen holder is an optional accessory for pens & markers + there is another pen holder for ball point type pens which comes standard with the cutter.

Permanent pens that will fit into the pen holder. I have experimented and dont know brands off the top of my head. Take the pen holder with you when you shop for pens to be sure they fit into it.

Hello! Is it possible to cut material longer than the cutting mat (if affixed to an appropriate stiffener / stabilizer?) If yes, is there a maximum length that the software will allow? Thank you!

    Like

    • lizafrica says:

      Hi Lisa,

The short answer is no. The blade has to press against the mat to cut. It cannot and won’t cut “off” the mat. There is a 15×30 inch mat available as an optional accessory to enlarge the cutting surface. Please ask your local janome/Artistic dealer about this.

    • lizafrica says:

      Hi Jackie,

Please refer to the chart in your Instruction manual where it lists settings for Heavy Weight materials (magnet sheets, foam, etc). In my manual it is page 8 but it may be different in yours as there have been additions to the manual. The settings are just recommendations. I have often adjusted these to suit my needs. For cutting foam: Blue cap blade; high tac mat, blade setting of 4-6 and pressure setting of 60-70. It is all listed there.
I use only craft foam or Sulky puffy foam which is quite thin – approx 1/16 to 1/8 inch thick. It has to be able to feed under the rollers on the cutter.
Please ask your Artistic or Janome dealer where you purchased your cutter to give you some lessons and/or refer to the many video’s on the Artistic You Tube channel as well as on Itunes. Also check out http://janomespecials.com/edge/ for more information.

      Hi Cyndi,

I really am not able to assist you in any detail on this comment forum. You certainly can do a search for all the many posts we have done on the Artistic Edge on this janomelife blog + watch the You Tube video’s or iTunes podcasts (all free). Also google Artistsic Edge 15 and Artistic Creative products. There is a lot of information out there to access for free. The Simple Cut software is actually quite easy to grasp once you spent a bit of time with it. Be very sure you have upgraded to Version 7.1.
I am not sure where you are or where you bought your Artistic Edge cutter but hopefully you bought from an authorized dealer who can support you and answer your queries. We have been doing a series of Dealer and Consumer trainings since January across Canada so if you reside in Canada, our Janome or Elna dealers who also support the Artistic Edge should be able to help you with notes and exercises we made available to them. If you reside in another country, you would need to approach your dealer for similar information and programs.

    • lizafrica says:

      Hi Rita,

Most software packages are designed and intended for individual use and not to be shared by several people or groups of friends. This is why many software packages operate with a security device or dongle so that you may only open the software on one computer at a time. This Simple Cut software does not have a dongle but you are limited to installing the software on a maximum of 2 computers. For example: maybe I want the software on my desktop PC and on my laptop? I can certainly do this as I own the software and have a maximum of 2 software installs with my ownership.
If you wish to uninstall the software on one computer – perhaps you buy an new computer? You may then call the Software helpline 1-800-631-0183 Ext 775 to have them deactivate the one computer to allow you to install the software on a new computer.

But installing on 3 or more computers for multiple user use. No, sorry, not possible.

This looks like a amazing tool. I’m assuming I can still use it for regular appliqué as I don’t have a fancy embroidery machine, although they are looking very tempting!!!,

    • lizafrica says:

      Hi Julia
ABSOLUTELY, I have done many “regular” appliques using my sewing/quilting machine (not an embroidery machine) to applique stitch around the edge of my applique shape. That sample with the Christmas tree forest is one such project: I cut the triangular shaped trees with the Artistic Edge Digital cutter which was wonderful as I had to out many trees (I made 3 of these wall hangings hence needing many trees!). All the fabric had fusible web already fused to the back of my tree fabric so when it had been cut lickety-split fast with the cutter, I just peeled off the paper on the back & ironed my trees in place. Then I had a great deal of fun picking different applique and decorative stitches for stitching around my trees. It was a fun project.

can I create applique files that my can my brother pe770 can read and stich out directly from the simple cut software using my own designs, or would I need additional digitizing software?

    Like

    • lizafrica says:

      Hi Kileigh,

I am not familiar with this brother model at all but I would assume the format for it is .pes? If so, the answer is yes. The Simple Cut software with the Artistic Edge 15 Digital cutter saves to more than 30 (34 I think) different embroidery formats. .pes is amongst these formats. The Simple Cut will read and save to .pes – onto a USB stick directly from Simple Cut software or send with whatever is your method of transferring a design to your Embroidery machine. It digitizes hundreds of different applique stitches for stitching around any applique you can dream up to cut with this Edge 15 Cutter. It is a wonderful & powerful software package and pretty impressive that it is included with our Artistic cutter!

Also can you do embroidery only desings or is the stiching on the software mostly for the applique outlines

        Hi Kileigh,

Unfortunately, I am not able to address these kinds of detailed queries on this forum. We encourage you to contact your local Janome dealer or the Software helpline 1-800-631-0183 Ext 775. But very briefly: The software will open 15 different graphic formats and approx 30 different embroidery file formats. Yes, you can turn a coloured graphic into an applique. You can open embroidery designs + save them but this software will only digitize or create applique designs. I have taken embroidery designs and converted them to cutting files and applique designs.
