GLORIA LOUGHMAN FROM AUSTRALIA VISITS BC, CANADA

This is the real quilt which graces the cover of one of Glorias books: Radiant Landscapes

This is the real quilt which graces the cover of one of Gloria’s books: Radiant Landscapes. It apparently took her over 18 months to make although she does admit to travelling almost half the year away from home. The quilt was made in 4 separate sections and then joined – 3 across and then the bottom part across horizontally. She told us that hubby often travels with her and he piped up from the audience that is because she uses his luggage allowance for more quilts! NO kidding. I know exactly how she feels as I frequently make my way to Vancouver airport with at least 3 -4 pieces of luggage – maxed out at what we can check or carry!

I own all 3 of Gloria Loughman’s quilting books. I suppose you could call me an ardent fan although I have not yet made a quilt using the techniques she covers in her books……..but possibly I will one day?!

Who is Gloria Loughman? She is an Award winning Australian quilt artist and book author. Read up more info on her website.

This is another of her quilts - in the book "Quilted Symphony" which offers more abstract compositions.

I was lucky enough to attend a Quilting Guild meeting in Ladner, BC recently where Gloria was the visiting speaker. Here are some pics of quilts she brought with her – SO nice to see up close & in real life the quilts that I have “drooled over” in her books. AND I took my 3 books which she graciously signed for me!

Another quilt she had on display. I cannot recall if this is part of the new book on buildings and architecture? We will find out next year. Obviously the Opera House in Sydney, Australia. This is showing a festival of some sort that shines brightly coloured lights onto the roof of the opera house and then there are reflections on the water of Sydney Harbour.

SO glad I was in town the week Gloria was doing this presentation and thus able to attend at a local quilting guild where I was one of founding members: Boundary Bay Quilter’s Guild. It was well worth it. Hope you like the pics of these quilts?!

I was surprised to read your blog on Gloria Loughman as it arrived in my email just four days after purchasing her Craftsy Class on Linear Landscape Quilts. I hadn’t heard of Gloria til then but I will be a fan for life and look forward to buying her books! I watched her class just once and have learned so much about landscape quilting and other quilting tips as well – she is an excellent teacher.

      Hi Joselyn,

Glad you enjoyed the post. I was blown away by seeing the quilts up close & in real life – not just in the lovely glossy pages of my books. They are very stunningly beautiful. No big surprize that she has won awards all over for her quilts!

Liz, Thanks for sharing. My very favourite is the stunning quilt of the Sydney Opera House. I got a heart flicker when it cam up on my screen, brought back memories of seeing that fabulous building in 2003. I want to go back and go to the Opera – probably won’t happen, but I can dream. Her other quilts are also stunning. I think she should make a quilt of the picture of her giving the lecture as it seems so doable from looking at her other works.

    Again, thanks for sharing.
