Liz,
Thank you so much for your quick response and reply. I’m going to order the wick from an online site and try to put it back in myself. My local authorized service person said it would cost $15 for shipping (not sure where he’s getting it from) for a $1 wick. I can get the wick from out-of-state for $1.30 and shipping just under $6. I have been doing a lot of sewing so it was most informative to know that I need to put a drop of oil in that wick every couple of months.
I do have one more question, does any other parts of the Janome Sewist 740DC require oiling for a 2 month old computerized machine, or will the annual servicing suffice.
You have been so helpful. Thanks again!
Hi Rita,
It is unfortunate but there are minimum charges for Shipping/couriers. I do not know where you are but here in Canada, where our country is so large, tiny items ordered individually can carry a disproportionate amount of shipping.
You might like to do a search on Janomelife ( search box on the right of the screen) as we have done posts on Basic maintenance on our machines. We also have videos in some of our posts and on our You Tube channel called Janome Life. Pretty sure there was a video on the last maintenance/ care of your machine post that we did.
That wick under the bobbin is the ONLY place you should oil. You won’t be able to see this now but if your machine needs oil, and you put ONE drop onto that wick, tiny little bubbles comes to the surface. Maybe one more drop is necessary but certainly NO more if the bubbles stop coming to the surface.
Only an authorized Janome Service technician should be doing any further work on your machine. A once a year service is sufficient. During a service they clean out and lubricate the inside of your machine. I’m not sure I would know how to put that wick back properly so do take care. You don’t want to jeopardize your warranty.
Thank you for information about the wick. I dug it out (it’s not in one piece but fragments) because I didn’t know. The place where I would take the machine for service told me I don’t need to replace the wick to use the machine. Is this true? I don’t want to damage my Janome Sewist 740 DC, it’s a new machine. Thanks.
Our Janome Service technician says the fact that you pulled that wick out won’t affect the performance of your machine – for now. But it IS necessary for providing oil to the bottom of your machine so you are going to have to ask your Janome authorized dealer to replace it with a new wick when you get your machine serviced. Normally we oil every couple of months depending on when that wick gets dry and how much sewing we have been doing. So my advice would be not to leave this too long.
nice to know, thou this should have been in the manual as well as other details for us new bees. My machine has white at the bottom? Can one buy a service manual?
It is expected that all customers will have their machine serviced regualrly by an authorized Janome dealer/technician. If this is done, then oiling is probbaly not necessary. If you oil, it is the smallest drop into that wick. I mention the wick because more than 1 perosn I know has yanked it out with tweezers! So I like to mention this is not the thing to do.
Sorry, I dont know what model you have – many of our machines are white. But if you go to http://www.janome.com/en/support/manuals/ you may download the manual for your model for free.
If our Janome customers have their machines regularly servcied by an authorized Janome dealer/technician, there is probably little need to oil. However, if you do oil, just one tiny drop is all that is needed.

Hi Rita,
That does not sound right to me but I am not a Service Technician so I will ask our Service Department and get back to you.
