Wardrobe Building

Just recently, I have started to craft a bit of a personal philosophy when it comes to my work wardrobe. After many years of trying to be creative and create many different outfits from just as many different wardrobe pieces, I have started practicing something known as a wardrobe capsule concept.

This isn’t an original idea of mine, in fact, it’s quite popular and a quick search on Pinterest will pull up many tutorials and how-to ideas on creating your own capsule wardrobe.

For me, the capsule wardrobe concept is about creating staple wardrobe pieces. Items that fit properly and flatter accordingly. Are made out of quality materials that will last and wear well. And, most importantly, it’s a HUGE time saver in the morning because everything goes together in some way, shape or function.

For 2019, as I review my current capsule wardrobe and assess what needs to be retired and/or replaced, I decided a dress would be a welcome addition. AND – that I would make it… because well fitted dresses “off the rack” aren’t always the easiest to find.

This dress pattern is a favourite of mine. It’s got a bit of give in the hips making it very flattering. Its a suitable office knee-length, its sleeveless which means it can be easily worn under cardigans and blazers… and it works with a number of different materials. Cotton and linen being my favourites.

This is the first time I’ve used this Robert Kaufman linen. It’s a gorgeous design and in fitting with my capsule wardrobe concept – it’s a neutral to go with anything but will add just a bit of texture and interest with this modern design.

My *least* favourite part of any sewing project is the prep. (Clearly I also need to invest in some pattern weights). But once I’m through cutting out the pattern and the fabric, I’m always excited to keep working on my sewing projects to get them completed.

Installing the hidden zipper on this dress is not as tricky as I used to think it was. Using the zipper foot on my Janome Skyline S7 definitely makes for quick work.

This was the result of my hidden zipper… see you can barely see it back there!!    Ed: we are impressed, Trina!

I was able to make quick work on this project and finished it over two nights.

The pleated darts on this dress, two in the front and two in the back just mid-hip, really make it such a lovely fit. And it’s not at all complicated.

I’m so excited to bring this dress into my capsule wardrobe rotation. A little something “fresh” for the new year – and handmade, too! I love wearing something new to work and having someone comment on it, asking where you got it and being able to say, “I made that!”

Do you make items that you wear yourself? What’s the last piece of wardrobe sewing you completed? What is your favourite dress or apparel pattern?

I would love to hear what you’re making and what your favourite pieces are as I hope to make a few more items to add to my wardrobe throughout the year. Inspire me!
