How to sew a face mask

A lot has changed in just one short week……..We published a step-by-step pictorial tutorial including a pattern to download on www.janome.ca. You may find  this helpful. There are also links to other important and applicable information. Please read this if you are thinking of making fabric face masks.

While these fabric masks are not adequate protection against the virus, some reports I am reading  say that fusing a non-woven bonded interfacing (ie iron it and the glue melts to fuse to fabric) between the cotton layers may increase the barrier slightly for use in some home situations.

Happy sewing…..whatever is under your needle today!

      Hi Susan,
I will check with our webmaster but I think we removed it to make room for new programs we have just launched. But there are MANY masks online that you can access. You can also go to our Inspire Tab and scroll down to View all Projects. There are at least 2 mask projects there – I just did a quick check. Another place to go is the Janome Sewing Machines Facebook page where there have been videos on this subject. One was a super fast serger mask. And Jen Tryon over at Tryonahandmadelife has made both masks with a serger and a sewing machine.
If you still can’t find a mask pattern, let me know but I think you will find what you are looking for as there have probably been literally hundreds if not thousands of free patterns on offer since early on in the Pandemic.

      Hi Caroline,

Just go to http://www.janome.ca and click on the red box which says Make a mask project OR scroll down a little way to where it says: Make your own mask Pattern and Instructions. BotH take you to the same place: a PDF document you can download. If you do not have Adobe Reader software on yuor computer, you may not be able to open a PDF so you may have to download that software – it is free here so probably is in the Uk too.

Thank you for sharing this. Any kind of mask is better than nothing at all when the need approaches to be out and about. It at least reminds me to not touch my face.

      Hi Kathy

Yes, you are right. I wore mine yesterday when I had to go out to buy groceries. It sure reminded me not to touch my face as that habit is a hard one to break?!
      Happy sewing!

      Hi Angie,

Are you on our website http://www.janome.com? If you are you will see the link to click front and centre on our home page.
Just click : Make a mask project. If this won’t open, it could be that you do not have the correct software on your computer to open a PDF file. If that is the case, you may need to download Adobe Reader (which is free). Google to find this software. PDF’s dont open if yuo dont have Adobe readrer software.
      Happy sewing.
