Playing with Janome Stitches – Part II

If like me, you’re sewing machine is used mostly for piecing and quilting, you probably haven’t explored all the beautiful decorative stitches your machine has to offer. Every time you lift the top of your Janome MC9450 you see all 350 stitches staring at you.

I wanted to try some of these stitches to get a better idea of what they will look like when stitched out and at the same time have a useful project.

These little trees can be used as Christmas decorations or perhaps gift tags that will be a lovely keepsake for the person receiving them. By using a light coloured solid fabric on the back and writing with a gel pen you can include a seasonal sentiment. Don’t forget to include the year as well!

To set up my machine for decorative stitches, I need to select the decorative stitch icon. When you do this, the Janome MC9450 recommends the correct foot. In this case it is telling me to use the F Foot. The Janome MC9450 comes with two F Feet: a regular F Foot and an Open Toe F Foot. I usually work with an open toe foot when given the option for more visibility. Also ensure you are using the standard zig-zag needle plate.

I marked out a length of 4.5″ wide fabric with triangles alternating in each direction leaving a space between them to change my choice of decorative stitch. A line down the centre of the strip was also marked to ensure my first line of stitching is straight. I layered the fabric with batting and backing. I then created my first row of stitching by following the marked centre line. Each time I came to a new section I tried a new decorative stitch.

When stitching subsequent rows, I lined the foot up against the previous line and followed along. I was able to make 6 rows of stitching over the 5 triangular shapes and therefore tried out 30 of the 350 available decorative stitches.

Another option to line up rows of decorative stitching really easily, is to use the Janome Border Guide foot.  We have done many blog posts on Janome Life about this foot as well as videos on our You Tube channel.  These links are only the start. Do a search for many more posts on this wonderful optional accessory.

Good news is that the Border Guide Foot FOR 7mm JANOME MACHINES is going to be available at HALF PRICE  for the holidays. This only applies to the 7mm foot Part # 200434003 due to an overstock in our warehouse. (This discount does NOT apply to the 9mm one – that is regular price).  Be sure to ask your Janome Canada dealer to order you the 7mm Border Guide foot – Part # 200434003 if you have a 7mm model Janome sewing machine. Happy holidays!!  This offer will be available soon at your local Janome Canada dealer.  Ed

To assemble the trees, I cut the strip apart, added a ribbon and a backing. I stitched the backing on, trimmed, then turned the tree right side out. I slipped in a piece of bias tape for the tree trunk and top stitched the opening which closed it up and attached the trunk at the same time.

This is a great little project in so many ways.

  • You get to try out all those decorative stitches.
  • Use up scraps of different solid fabrics, batting or stabilizer.
  • Opportunity to play with thread. Perhaps finish off a spool or two?
  • It’s a wonderful project to do with children. They will have fun choosing the stitches and watching them stitch out.

Regardless of which Janome you own, I encourage you to try out the decorative stitches and see how beautifully they stitch out.
