So, you’ve finally done it!
You took your brand new, beautiful serger or cover hem machine out of the box, or have taken your older serger out of the cupboard and are ready to give it another go – now what?!? What type of thread to use on your serger or cover hem machine is question we get asked a lot.
The short answer is to use whatever works best for your application. Experiment by doing little test samples to see if you’re happy with the results; that the thread is giving you the effect you were hoping to achieve. Here’s few things you may consider, however.
Most serger or “overlock” thread is 2 ply, meaning it has 2 finer strands twisted together to make one strand of thread. Since sergers and cover hem machines, like the Janome Cover Pro 2000CPX , use more thread, typically 3-4 spools or cones, the recommended thread to use for most projects is generally thinner; more fine, so it doesn’t produce extra bulk in the seams allowances.
My favourite thread to use is the fabulous Madeira Aerolock polyester thread, which, though quite fine, is also quite strong and will stand up to repeated washing and wear and tear use. Conveniently available from our Janome and Elna dealers, (Janome Canada is a distributor of Madeira threads) it comes in many, many, many colours, though I personally use the box of neutrals the most.

A quick, easy, professionally finished Rolled Hem is just one the fast and fun techniques you can do on most sergers. Madeira Aeroflock thread is ideal to use, in the upper looper especially, as it provides great coverage as the thread wraps around to the underside of the fabric.
Madeira Aeroflock thread is a fuzzy, fluffy polyester thread with some stretch to it, so in addition to rolled hems, it also works well when serging or stitching the cover hem on knits, especially for dancewear, leggings, etc. It’s also a very soft thread, so consider using it for loungewear, or kids wear. Just look at all those bright, yummy colours!
ANY serger, like the Janome Magnolia 7034D, Janome FA4 Free Arm serger, Janome AT2000D air thread serger will love Madeira Aerolock and Aeroflock thread because it does not produce as much lint as other serger threads I’ve used. Cleaning your serger regularly is a given; there’s no escaping that, but I’ve been so impressed when using the Madeira threads as I haven’t had to brush out the excess lint in the looper area as often.
