I recently attended a 7 day quilting retreat with friends. What a great way to refresh and get back into sewing. Great food, great friends and great sewing accomplishments. I got several UFO’s (Unfinished Objects) completed, but I also got a few projects done that I’ve really wanted to do, but kept putting off.
Several of my friends liked what I was doing, so we all decided to make a Spicy Spiral Table Runner. I got the pattern as a gift from a friend and thought it looked fun and very different. You need 8 different fabrics; dark to light. The pattern is very straight forward, but it does require a specialty ruler. If you are interested in the pattern or other unique patterns contact Phillips Fiber Arts.
I love that we all chose different fabrics and the outcomes were amazing. The first one pictured below is mine.

We love the movement created by the gradations of the fabrics used and the construction and shape of the table runner.

We have some very talented sewists in my group!

Going to a retreat or a class means packing up your machine, and sewing supplies to travel. Machines should be secure in your vehicle, and a seat belt wrapped around it just doesn’t cut it. One of the best ways to store and transport your machine is to use a Tutto Sewing Trolley. Janome Canada is a distributor of Tutto cases, so check with your Janome Dealer for details. Also, check out our NEW Janome Partner Products Notions and Accessories Catalogue on Janome.CA. There will find information on Tutto bags, Madeira Threads and Stabilizers, Daylight Lamps, Arrow Chairs and Sewing Cabinets – and MORE! It’s a great resource!

These cases are amazing! See how the machine is securely strapped into the case to prevent it from getting bounced around. There are so many pockets for all your required accessories to make your retreat or class a success. They come in different sizes for different machines and different colours. Contact your local Janome Dealer to purchase a fabulous addition to your travel sewing experience.
Tip: I keep a list to ensure that I don’t forget something important…like the power cord or foot pedal. If you create your list long before you travel, you will be surprised at how many items you suddenly think of wanting to take. Here is my sewing list:
Don’t forget to take:
Janome Sewing Machine | |
Foot Pedal | |
Power Cord | |
Even Feed or AcuFeed Flex Foot (depending on the machine)
¼ Inch Foot | |
Seam Ripper | |
Madeira Thread | |
Rotary Cutter | |
Spare Blades for Rotary Cutter
Ruler | |
Iron | |
Ironing Board | |
Snips | |
Janome Prewound Bobbins
Fabric |
It is an awful feeling getting to retreat or a class and realizing you don’t have a power cord or bobbins…ask me how I know, lol! The Tutto trolley cases and accessory bags help you stay organized!
Happy Sewing!

Always cut your projects before you leave for a retreat.

Great advice, Judy. More prep, but more time spent actually sewing there, which is what we all want! Happy Quilting!
