Janome Presser Foot Spotlight – Hemmer Foot (D)

I got my Janome HD9BE a few months ago and I am still madly in love with it! It’s rugged and durable, while also providing a smooth sewing experience with must-have features like the needle up/down button and the auto thread cutter. Most people associate the Janome HD9 with heavy projects like denim, vinyl and canvas. While it is certainly made to handle these hefty fabrics, it’s also a fantastic all-around sewing machine for garment making, Home Dec, tote bags and quilting.

The machine comes with a lovely Janome Hemmer Foot (D) in the accessory box (Part Number: 761172004). This foot is also referred to as a Rolled Hem foot and comes with a variety of models. The great thing about Janome presser feet is that no matter what the machine model, the presser feet are all the same. The Janome Hemmer Foot/ Rolled Hem Foot is the (D) foot no matter what the model and the foot is used in the same way on all machines.

Of all the rolled hem feet I’ve tried, this one is becoming by favourite! It feels very solid and works incredibly well!

If we look on the underside, you’ll see a groove. This indicates how wide the finished hem will be. In this case, it’s 1/8″, or approximately 3mm.

If you’re familiar with hemming feet, you probably know the traditional method of pressing the start of the hem before feeding it into the foot – and burning your fingers in the process! I’m going to show you a fast and easy method that requires no pressing at all!

First, with the wrong side up, make a few stitches back and forth at the edge of the fabric. Then, pull the fabric out and cut the threads, leaving a few inches of thread coming from the fabric. These threads will act as a ‘tail’ to help you pull the fabric into the foot and start the hem. I’ve demonstrated it for you in the video below!

Now, holding the thread tail in your left hand, pull the fabric into the foot diagonally, so that it rolls into the hem. Drop the presser foot and begin sewing! Now all you have to do is ensure that you’re keeping the folded edge at an even width. Watch the video below to see the demonstration and the fantastic results!

If you’re new to this method, I would recommend practicing with some scrap pieces. Once you get it, you’ll never do it another way!
