Draw your simple shapes on Freezer paper using a black sharpie marker. Cut out each shape individually.

Iron the freezer paper to the scrap piece of fabric of your choice. Place the batting on the bottom then place the background fabric on top of the batting and finally place the desired shape on top of the background piece. You can use a dab of glue on the back of the scrap fabric to keep it in place on the background fabric if you wish.

Set your machine on Free Motion Quilting using your free motion or darning foot Don’t forget to lower the feed dogs.

With a heavy weight black thread, I used a 12 weight cotton thread, test on a scrap fabric for tension. In the bobbin I use an 80wt Deco Bob thread. If the tension with the heavy thread on top is too strong your can change the red dot bobbin holder to a yellow dot bobbin holder for a tighter tension. This is a good practice in testing the various bobbin holders. Sew or free motion your way around the edge of the freezer paper. Don’t worry about the wobbly sewing it’s supposed to be that way. Remove the paper and sew around one more time.

Using your Janome Applique scissors trim the outside edge.

Repeat the same process with any additional shapes to complete the ornament.

Place your background piece on top of burlap and add the little ribbon by tucking it in between the batting and the burlap. You can add a dab of glue to keep the two sections together. Change your foot to the AccuFeed Flex Foot, don’t forget to raise your feed dogs. Starting at the top corner to secure the ribbon start sewing a zig zag stitch or other decorative stitch of your choice.

Trim edges as required. Design your own and these are great gift tags or post card. Your imagination is limitless. Decorate them with buttons or metallic threads and more.

Happy Appliquéing.
